On November 2, 2009, Erica and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary.  We extended our time off by an extra day, and took the kids to daycare.  Then we set out on our traditional trip to Herrmann, Missouri for the day.  We got a little bit of a late start (big surprise) and had breakfast at Cracker Barrel in town before leaving.  Then we hit the road.  We went to Swiss, Missouri first (just south of Herrmann) to visit Swiss Meats and load up on some incredibly good brats and smoked meats.  After packing the cooler with that, we returned to Herrmann.  We had lunch at Stone Hill Winery's Vintage Restaurant, which serves awesome German food.  We also visited the Herrmannhof Winery and Adam Puchta Winery (our favorite) before finally reaching the point in the day where we needed to leave to pick up the kids and return home.  Of course, we brought about a case and a half of wine home with us!  We had a nice dinner at home, and enjoyed a quiet evening (which of course can't happen until the kids are asleep - there is no such thing as quiet with them awake!)

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Erica for thirteen wonderful years of marriage (or as she says, "twelve wonderful years and one other one.")  She's been with me through a lot, she's brought two beautiful kids into the world with me, and she's stood steadfastly beside me through everything.  I love her more than she knows, even if I didn't give her a traditional gift this year (which is lace, by the way).  I look forward to spending many more happy years of marriage with her!

ImageHalloween fell on a Saturday this year, so we were able to make a day of it this year instead of just an evening.  This was important because it was the first Halloween John was old enough to participate in.  Also, the kids' daycare was on vacation for the final two weeks of October.  Erica and I took some time off during this period to stay home with them.  This meant that we were able to really enjoy the few days before Halloween with them.  Unfortunately it was rainy most of those two weeks, so it was impossible to play outdoors with them (unless you wanted two little mudballs running through the house).  Even when it was sunny, it was too sloppy to do much outdoors.

Laura got into the spirit of things by helping Erica decorate the house.  She was VERY proud of the spooky tree centerpiece that she and mommy assembled and put on the dining room table.  They stuck window clings on the windows, and put out the candle holders (including the skulls, which she was afraid of last year so they didn't come out then).  They hung up wall decorations, and got out the treat bags for trick-or-treating.  She helped me hang the big spider and its web on the front porch.  On the Wednesday before Halloween, the weather was nice enough to go to the pumkpin patch, so we loaded up and went to Peachtree Farms to choose our pumpkins and see the animals there.  Laura was pretty excited about the whole thing, and John was too for a while.  John started to get tired, so Laura and I saw the rest of the animals by ourselves.  We chose two big Jack-O-Lanterns, and Laura and John each got a small pumpkin of their own.  We also bought a few pie pumpkins.  Laura helped mommy cook those down the next day.  She wanted to make pie right away!  We carved the pumpkins on Friday.  She wanted to make one a scary face and one a happy face, so that's what we did.  We had some help from Uncle B, too.

ImageThe summer always goes way too fast for me.  One day it’s my birthday in May and the next day students have returned to MU.  A lot has happened this summer, so let me just start at the beginning........

I turned 36 May 30.  Nothing profound or life changing about that other than I’m at the “end” of my mid-30s.  I have a few more gray hairs, and some extra pounds I would like to lose, but I’m generally good.

Andy’s grandmother, affectionately referred to as Grandma Vi, passed away the beginning of June.  While it was sad, it was really not unexpected.  She had been in a steady decline for a while.  Andy went to Chicago for the service while I stayed home with the kids.  I wanted to go with him, but John was sick with an ear infection.  Andy was going to take Laura, but it was an open casket service and we both felt that it would be too difficult for Laura to see.  Andy got to see a lot of family that he hadn't seen in a while and overall he said it was a good visit.

We spent 10 days at the end of June/beginning of July on vacation.  We got to visit old friends, great family, and see Charleston, SC.  It was a wonderfully fun trip.  Andy and I both agreed that a return visit to Charleston is necessary.  We didn’t get much time to really explore the city and see all the things we wanted to see because Andy was extremely busy with Sigma Chi Grand Chapter.  We all very much enjoyed ourselves.  We got the best of both worlds in this vacation.  We got to see family and have some time to ourselves.  Good times!

8/1996 - 9/10/2009
8/1996 - 9/10/2009
Sam passed away today.

We had to make the decision a few days ago that today would be the day.  While her spirits were still great, the tumor in her mouth had gotten to the point that it was interfering with her eating (it had begun to grow from the roof of her mouth too, and was growing over a couple of teeth), and she was having more problems with her breathing, especially overnight.  Also, when she ate she would get food caught in it, and this would irritate it even more.  She would scratch it, and it would then bleed a lot.  She also had started growing tumors on her ribcage.  We made the decision because while she was still mostly happy, she was deteriorating more quickly.  I called the vet Tuesday night (she was kind enough to give us her home number for such a situation) and we scheduled a time.  Ironically, I called her while Sam and I were on a walk, and while I was on the phone Sam saw a squirrel and went trotting off after it, as quickly as her old bones could carry her.  As I said, she was still in very good spirits most of the time.  I stayed home with her yesterday and spent the day with her, just hanging out with her and petting her.  We went for a couple of walks, and I fed her a few hot dogs.  She had gotten to the point where she refused all dog food, so we had been feeding her hot dogs.  Finally, this morning Erica and I took her for one last walk.  Then we loaded her up for the tearful drive to the vet's office.  When we got there, she did NOT want to go in.  She turned around and headed back for the truck.  I felt so horrible carrying her in.

This afternoon, I'm home.  I'm mostly just numb, but I occasionally just start bawling.  I can't get used to a world without Sam.  She gave us 13 wonderful years.  She deserved so much more than I could ever give her in return.  I hate the stages of grief, because I am going back and forth between being angry at myself for not spending more time with her over the years, sad because of the sickness she had to endure and the rest of her life she did not get to live, guilty because I could do absolutely nothing to make her better, and numb just thinking about it all.  If it is anything like it was with Smokey though, it should get easier in a few days when I pick up her ashes and bring her home for the last time.  I just want her back!

ImageAre you ready for this????  Laura is…… POTTY-TRAINED!  It’s fantastic.  I’m sure she will have a few accidents here and there, but she is doing so well.  I still put pull-ups on her at night just in case, but during the day she’s good to go.  I’m very excited because we are down to diapers on one kid now!  No more $100+ in diapers a month!  A package of pull-ups for a month costs us $11.  Yay!  It took her a while to figure out #2, but I stumbled across a trick a couple of weeks ago and it works well.  When she says that she has to go “poopy,” I put her on the potty and give her a book.  Walk away and leave her alone.  She reads the book and just about the time she finishes reading the book, she’s gone the bathroom.  It’s all about the book.  Before, she would have to go #2, but wouldn’t stay on the potty long enough to go.  It was frustrating me because then I’d be cleaning up the messy underwear.  The book causes just enough distraction that she stays on the potty long enough.  Laura also LOVES wearing her Elmo, Ariel (from The Little Mermaid), and Dora the Explorer underwear.  She gets so excited to pick it out every day.

As for John, it seems like he was just born yesterday, but as of next week, he’s 11 months old.  He’s over 22 pounds now and growing fast.  He’s wearing 12-18 month clothes and some 18-24 month clothes.  I’m guessing he’ll start to slow down soon, but for now, he’s really built like a tank.  He’s crawling all over the place and routinely pulling himself up to his feet.  He’ll cruise along furniture or the bathtub now and then, but his arms are so long that he can generally reach what he wants so cruising isn’t a real priority.  He will take steps if you hold his hands and walk with him.  Next week, we will be taking him to the doctor for a consult on whether or not he will need to see an Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist.  At 11 months, he’s had five ear infections so I’m guessing we will be given a referral.  I also had ear problems as a kid so I was actually surprised that Laura never had these problems.  I guess John got my ears.
